Lesson #2

Lesson #2

Use individuals on campus

Your freshman year can feel like you’re being thrown into the wilderness with just a butter knife. You’ve spent your life depending on other people. Even though it feels like that has been taken all away at once, that’s far from the truth when you come to the UNE. Even though they aren’t your parents, the faculty and staff on campus will become one of the most important aspects of your college experience. I promise, you will not make it out alive without the hidden figures all around campus that make or break your college experience.

When it comes to academics, the tutors in SASC (the student academic success center) are something that you should take advantage of. SASC is located close to the Alfond Center for Health Sciences and You’re able to use your peers as tutors creating a comfortable environment for all. Next, the librarians are and should be your best friends when it comes to researching. They are so incredibly knowledgeable and can save you a lot of headache while doing a huge research project. They can lead you to so many resources ranging from reliable, peer reviewed articles to films and videos. Lastly, when it comes to writing, on the second floor in the Danielle Ripich Commons is the writing fellows resource. You can make appointments with peers that are specifically experienced in many different writing styles.

Next, some individuals that aren’t necessarily helpful academically, will also save your life all of your years at UNE. The first being the building managers of each building, like the Harold Alfond Forum, or the Danielle Ripich Commons. These individuals guide and direct you through the building and even through campus. They are well informed on rules, regulations, campus events, and more. Next, is your RAs. They’re there for more than just keeping an eye on everything that goes down on their floor, but they are very good at that. RAs serve as someone you can talk to about academic or personal issues. They plan events to create a community within your floor, helping with the process of making new friends and peers. These individuals spend their academic career helping others in so many ways, especially helping you when you lock yourself out of your room.
